Introduction of Board of Secondary Education Odisha (BSE)

The Board of Secondary Education, Odisha is a Body Corporate constituted under the Odisha Secondary Education Act, 1953. It regulates, controls and developes Secondary Education in the State of Odisha. It Provides varied courses in order to equip students for different occupations, to prepare them for University education and to equip them for various cultural purposes. It examines those who have completed a prescribed course of study and awards certificates to the successful candidates. Besides, it does all other things which are incidental to the above.

It started functioning in the year 1955 and is now located at Bajrakabati Road, Cuttack-753001, Odisha (India).

Functions of Board of Secondary Education Odisha (BSE)

The major functions of the Board are :
» To conduct High School Certificate Examinations (H.S.C.E.) and examinations of other courses prescribed by the Board.
» To prepare courses of studies, text books, teaching materials etc.
» To publish and distribute/sell text books, syllabuses, lesson notes, work books and other related materials.
» To issue certificates of the examinations conducted by the Board and equivalence certificate to the examinations of other State Boards.
» To recognise the secondary schools for the examinations of the Board.
» To make regulations for undertaking different functions of the Board.
» To take care of Secondary Education through Orientation Programmes, Refresher Courses and other academic programmes.

Structure of Board of Secondary Education Odisha (BSE)

The Board consist of the following categories of members as per the Odisha Secondary Education Act, 1953 and as amended in the year 1979. MEMBERSHIP : Ex-officio members    : 38 (Including President and Vice- President of the Board) Nominated members  : 35 (Nominated by the State Govt.) Elected Members       : 03 (From the Odisha Legislative Assembly) Elected Members       : 08 (Representing the Universities) Co-opted Members    : 05 (Co-opted and appointed by the Board Annually) The Board has the following statutory committees : COMMITTEES : i) Executive Committee ii) Education Committee iii) Examination Committee iv) Recognition and Grants Committee v) Finance Committee vi) Syllabus Committees vii) Other Committees : a) Selection Committee for appointment of officers of the Board b) Selection Committee for appointment of Academic Officers and staff of the Board c) Regulation Committee d) Correspondence Course Committee e) Academic Programme Advisory Committee.

Central Library for Schools

The Board has its own reference library equipped with about 11,075 titles. It provides reference services to teachers, students, experts, academicians and researchers. It organises book exihibitions and library science training programmes for qualitative improvement for Secondary Education in the state.
The Central Library for schools was established in the year 1974 with an objective to improve the standards of school libraries in the state both in the establishment and services and to promote reading habit among children.
